Dosage & Administration

Recommended Dosage (Strictly as per Anesthesiologist):

• Induction (Healthy Adults): 1.5 to 2.5 mg/kg IV administered at a rate of 40 mg every 10 seconds until induction onset.
• Maintenance: Continuous infusion of 4 to 12 mg/kg/hour, or intermittent boluses of 25 mg to 50 mg.
• ICU Sedation: 0.3 to 4.0 mg/kg/hour.
• Strict Asepsis Warning: The emulsion contains no preservatives that actively kill bacteria. Vials and syringes must be used immediately after opening and discarded within 12 hours (infusion lines must also be changed every 12 hours) to prevent fatal sepsis.

Safety Warnings (CRITICAL):

• Airway Management: Causes profound respiratory depression and apnea. Must only be administered by personnel trained in endotracheal intubation and advanced airway management.
• Allergy Contraindication: FATAL RISK. Strictly contraindicated in patients with known allergies to eggs, egg products, soybeans, or soy products.
• Propofol Infusion Syndrome (PRIS): A rare but fatal syndrome characterized by severe metabolic acidosis, rhabdomyolysis, hyperkalemia, lipemia, and cardiac failure. Risk increases with high doses (>4 mg/kg/hr) for prolonged periods (>48 hours) in the ICU.
• Pain on Injection: Commonly causes burning pain at the IV site. Often mitigated by injecting into a large vein or pre-treating with IV Lidocaine.
