Product Overview

This formulation contains Artemether, a methyl ether derivative of Artemisinin, dissolved in a sterile oily vehicle.

• Mechanism (Oxidative Stress): The antimalarial activity depends on the cleavage of the endoperoxide bridge within the Artemether molecule by iron (heme) found inside the malaria parasite. This reaction generates transient free radicals that alkylate and damage parasite proteins and membranes, leading to rapid death.
• Lipid Solubility: Being lipid-soluble, Artemether is rapidly absorbed from the intramuscular site and widely distributed in tissues. It effectively crosses the Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB), making it highly effective against Cerebral Malaria (coma).
• Clearance Speed: It reduces parasite biomass faster than Chloroquine or Quinine, preventing the progression of severe malaria to fatal complications.

Dosage & Administration

Recommended Dosage (Strictly as per Physician):

• WARNING: NEVER give Intravenously (IV). Injecting oil into a vein can cause fatal pulmonary oil embolism.
• Loading Dose: 3.2 mg/kg body weight on Day 1.
• Maintenance Dose: 1.6 mg/kg body weight daily for the next 4 days.
• Total Course: Usually 5 days. Switch to oral ACT (Artemisinin Combination Therapy) as soon as the patient can swallow.

Safety Warnings (CRITICAL):

• Injection Site Pain: Oily injections can cause induration and pain. Use a new needle for every injection to minimize trauma.
• Pregnancy: Contraindicated in the First Trimester (risk of fetal resorption). Use in 2nd/3rd trimester only if the benefit outweighs the risk.
• QT Prolongation: Use caution in patients with cardiac issues (though risk is lower than with Quinine/Halofantrine).
