• Mechanism: The drug contains an **endoperoxide bridge**. When it comes into contact with the high iron concentrations found inside the malaria parasite (from digesting hemoglobin), this bridge “explodes,” releasing lethal free radicals that destroy the parasite’s membranes.
• Gameticidal Effect: It also targets the immature sexual stages (gametocytes) of the parasite, helping to reduce transmission back to mosquitoes.
• WHO Compliance: While highly potent, WHO guidelines recommend using oral Artesunate in combination with longer-acting drugs (like Amodiaquine or Mefloquine) to prevent resistance (ACT Therapy).

Dosage & Administration

Recommended Dosage (Strictly as per Physician/WHO Guidelines):

• Route: Oral.
• Standard Dose: 4 mg/kg body weight given once daily for 3 days.
• Combination Rule: WARNING: Oral monotherapy (using Artesunate alone) is strongly discouraged to prevent the development of drug resistance. It should always be co-administered with a partner drug unless contraindicated.
• Administration: Can be taken with or without food.

Safety Warnings:

• Delayed Hemolysis: Rare cases of delayed hemolytic anemia (breakdown of red blood cells) have been reported weeks after treatment. Patients should be monitored for dark urine or fatigue post-recovery.
• Pregnancy: While generally considered safe in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, use in the 1st trimester is restricted to situations where it is the only life-saving option available.
