Colistimethate Sodium (Colistin) belongs to the Polymyxin class of antibiotics. It is highly specific against Gram-negative bacteria, working like a “biological detergent” to disrupt bacterial cell membranes.
It is the “Antibiotic of Choice” for:
- Colibacillosis: Severe E. coli infections in poultry and calves (Septicemia and Enteritis).
- Salmonellosis: Systemic Salmonella infections causing high mortality in young livestock.
- Resistant Infections: Effective against bacteria resistant to Penicillins and Tetracyclines.

Therapeutic Indications & Usage
Poultry (Chicken/Turkeys):
- Treatment of Colisepticemia and Air Sac Disease caused by E. coli.
- Infectious Coryza and Fowl Cholera (caused by Pasteurella).
Calves, Sheep, Goats, Swine:
- Calf Scours: Severe diarrhea caused by enteric E. coli and Salmonella.
- Respiratory: Pneumonia associated with Pasteurella multocida.

Dosage & Administration
General Guidelines (As per Vet Prescription):
- Calves/Swine: 50,000 I.U. to 75,000 I.U. per kg body weight via IM, divided into 2 daily doses.
- Poultry: Often used via injection for high-value breeders or severe outbreaks (approx. 10,000 – 20,000 I.U. per kg).
- Duration: 3 consecutive days (up to 5 days for Salmonella).
Important Regulatory Warning:
- Withdrawal Period: Meat: 7 days. Eggs: Do not use in layers producing eggs for human consumption.
- Restricted Use: Due to its importance in human medicine, some countries restrict Colistin use in food animals. Check local regulations.
