- Titration: Dosage may be increased by one tablet every day or every other day, up to a maximum of 8 tablets (25/250) per day (rarely exceeds 2000mg Levodopa).
- Timing: Best taken 30 minutes before meals. However, if nausea occurs, it can be taken with a light snack.
- Protein Interaction (CRITICAL): High protein meals (meat, dairy) compete with Levodopa for absorption in the gut and brain. Patients should avoid high-protein meals at the same time as taking the medication.
Safety Warnings:
- Dyskinesia: Long-term high-dose use often leads to involuntary writhing movements (Dyskinesia). Dose reduction may be needed.
- “On-Off” Phenomenon: After years of use, the drug’s effect may wear off suddenly (“Off” state), leaving the patient immobile until the next dose kicks in.
- Psychiatric Effects: Can cause hallucinations, vivid dreams, or psychosis in elderly patients.
