Dosage & Administration
Recommended Dosage (Strictly as per Physician):
- Route: Intramuscular (IM) or Intravenous (IV) Bolus/Infusion.
- Mild to Moderate Infections (Adults): 250 mg to 500 mg IM or IV every 4 to 6 hours.
- Severe / Life-Threatening Infections (Adults): 1 g to 2 g IV every 4 to 6 hours (Max 12 g/day).
- Pediatrics: 50 to 100 mg/kg/day divided every 6 hours (up to 200 mg/kg/day in severe infections like meningitis).
- IV Administration: Inject slowly over 10 minutes to avoid vein irritation, or administer as an intermittent IV infusion over 30 minutes.
Safety Warnings (CRITICAL):
- Anaphylaxis: FATAL RISK. Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any penicillin. Cross-reactivity with Cephalosporins may occur.
- Hepatotoxicity: Elevated liver enzymes (AST/ALT) and cholestatic hepatitis can occur, especially with high-dose IV therapy. Monitor liver function tests regularly.
- Renal Toxicity: Acute interstitial nephritis has been reported. Monitor renal function and urinalysis.
- MRSA: Not effective against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Susceptibility testing is mandatory.
