Product Overview
This formulation contains Ethambutol Hydrochloride, a synthetic bacteriostatic antibiotic that targets the mycobacterial cell wall.
The “Wall Breaker” Specialist:
- Mechanism: Ethambutol specifically inhibits the enzyme arabinosyl transferase. This enzyme is responsible for polymerizing arabinose into arabinogalactan, a fundamental structural component of the mycobacterial cell wall.
- Synergy with Isoniazid/Rifampicin: By disrupting the cell wall structure, Ethambutol increases the permeability of the bacteria, allowing other potent killer drugs (like Rifampicin and Isoniazid) to enter the cell more easily.
- Bacteriostatic Role: While it stops bacteria from multiplying rather than killing them outright, its primary clinical role is to suppress the growth of mutant strains that might be resistant to other drugs in the combination regimen.
- Selectivity: It is active against nearly all strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. kansasii but has no effect on other bacteria or humans.
Product Composition & Strength
We supply this product as Film Coated Tablets. The coating is essential as Ethambutol HCl is highly hygroscopic (absorbs moisture) and has a bitter taste.

Manufacturing Authority
Marketed and Distributed by Healthy Inc from WHO-GMP & ISO 9001:2015 certified units.
- Moisture Management: Ethambutol Hydrochloride is extremely hygroscopic. If exposed to humid air, the tablets become soft and sticky. Our manufacturing lines use dehumidified air handling units (AHUs), and we utilize high-barrier packaging (Alu-Alu or PVDC) to ensure the product remains stable in tropical climates.
- Content Uniformity: Precise blending ensures that every tablet delivers the exact weight-based dose required to prevent under-dosing, which is a leading cause of drug resistance.
Therapeutic Indications (Human Use)
Indicated for the treatment of Tuberculosis (in combination with other drugs):
- Pulmonary Tuberculosis: First-line treatment (Intensive Phase).
- Extra-Pulmonary Tuberculosis: TB meningitis, bone TB, etc.
- MAC Infection: Treatment of Mycobacterium avium complex in immunocompromised patients (e.g., HIV/AIDS).
Dosage & Administration
Recommended Dosage (Strictly as per Physician/DOTS Guidelines):
- Route: Oral.
- Weight-Based Dosing:
- Initial Treatment: 15 mg/kg body weight, taken as a single daily dose.
- Re-treatment: 25 mg/kg body weight daily for 60 days, then reduce to 15 mg/kg.
- Renal Impairment: Ethambutol accumulates in kidney failure. Dose adjustment is mandatory based on Creatinine Clearance (usually given every 24-36 hours).
- Administration: Can be taken with food if gastric irritation occurs, although absorption is slightly better on an empty stomach.
Safety Warnings:
- Optic Neuritis (CRITICAL): The most serious side effect is retrobulbar neuritis, causing decreased visual acuity and loss of Red-Green color discrimination.
- Protocol: Patients must have a baseline eye exam before starting and report any blurred vision immediately. Not recommended for children too young to report visual changes.
- Hyperuricemia (Gout): Ethambutol reduces the renal excretion of uric acid, which can trigger acute gout attacks.
- Peripheral Neuropathy: Numbness in hands/feet (less common than with Isoniazid).
